Housing

For too many people in Hastings, housing is insecure, unhealthy, overcrowded, too expensive or they have nowhere to live at all.

When the government talks about building housing as the solution, their real agenda is about ‘economic growth’ i.e. building housing for private sale that makes big profits for developers but does nothing to address the actual shortage of secure, affordable, social housing.

The Hastings People’s Party does not accept that we need to sacrifice our green spaces to overdevelopment, that just creates more carbon emissions, when there are thousands of empty homes and holiday homes (Air B&Bs) as well as derelict homes and incomplete projects that could be brought back into usage and brownfield sites that should be prioritised first. The solution to our housing/hoarding crisis is to share out the housing we have available more fairly and to have decent housing provided by the government as a right ( as should be the case with healthcare and education). We need housing to be managed to meet people’s needs – not traded as an asset for profit.

All tenants, social or private, deserve respect and decent living conditions. Hastings People’s Party supports tenants and residents organising to campaign for better housing conditions, and we stand up for people who are in housing need.
