Local Democracy

Local government in Hastings is changing as the government introduces elements of devolution (an elected mayor for all of Sussex) and local government reorganisation (‘unitarizing’, or merging, the local district and county councils).

Hastings Peoples Party wants more democracy not less! We want maximum power at grassroots levels and maximum democracy to choose our representatives and hold them to account. We therefore want our local authorities to remain as local, and to be responsive to the community, as possible. We opposed the planned cancellation of the local elections.

We campaign for local government to represent the needs of local people, through improving policies such as the Hastings Local Plan and the Hastings Housing Strategy
